The Silk Road
The Silk Road was not actually a road. It wasn't even paved. The Silk Road was a name given to any route, land or sea, that led across 4000 miles from China to Rome. Each had something the other wanted. Rome had gold, silver, and precious gems. China had silk, spices, and ivory. In addition to products, ideas also traveled along the Silk Road.
It was dangerous to travel the Silk Road. One faced white-hot sand dunes in the desert, intimidating mountains, brutal winds, and poisonous snakes. Over the centuries, the Silk Road became lined with huge temples and booming cities. It became far easier to travel the road, but it was never entirely easy. There were still vast stretches of deserts and mountains to cross, with no city or water in sight. |
